Renowned architect Alexis Dornier has designed a unique project on the forested slopes of Payangan in northern Ubud, Bali, forming a ring-shaped villa around a lush central courtyard. Named ‘Villa Omah Prana’ and covering 475 square meters, it stands as a notable example of modern villa design in a tropical climate, combining contemporary architecture, biophilic principles, and a fresh reinterpretation of traditional Balinese spatial concepts.
The villa’s architecture takes the form of a ring resting on the ground, with a low wooden roof that continuously wraps around the structure, creating shaded outdoor pathways and giving the central core a inward-focused character. The roof’s shingle texture and earthy tones harmonize seamlessly with the tropical forest surroundings, while the central void allows natural light and effective ventilation. This distinctive interpretation of a circular layout presents a fresh approach to modern villa design, emphasizing coexistence with nature.
The interior features curved circulation paths, herringbone-patterned brickwork, and dark wooden ceilings, creating a calm and refined atmosphere. Expansive openings provide direct access to the central garden, which serves as a focal point for relaxation, meditation, and natural ventilation. The combination of warm materials, controlled lighting, and a continuous dialogue with the surrounding greenery reinterprets the spirit of traditional Balinese architecture within the context of modern villa design.
Along the villa’s outer curve, a crescent-shaped infinity pool follows the forested slope, gently blurring the boundary between the building and the landscape. This thoughtful design not only provides expansive views of the valley and surrounding greenery but also reinforces the circular form of the project, creating a seamless experience between indoor and outdoor living.
Despite its circular form and lush inner courtyard, the villa functions as a climatic buffer, naturally regulating interior temperatures. The roof overhang provides ample shading for exterior pathways, while expansive openings optimize airflow.
