BIG Unveils Design for Bhutan’s Gelephu International Airport; To Be Showcased at Venice Biennale 2025

March 6, 2025

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled the design for Gelephu International Airport in Bhutan. As the country’s second international airport, this project is part of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) masterplan, designed to support future growth while reflecting Bhutan’s cultural and environmental values. The airport focuses on blending traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship with contemporary architecture, utilizing locally sourced timber and a modular structure for future flexibility. Its design has been developed in collaboration with Arup, Cistri, and aviation engineering firm NACO.

The airport is located near the Bhutan-India border, alongside the Paitha River. Covering an area of 68,000 square meters, it is designed to accommodate 1.3 million passengers annually by 2040, with projections reaching 5.5 million by 2065. Incorporating locally sourced timber and traditional Bhutanese wood carvings, the airport presents a sustainable design that pays homage to Bhutan’s architectural heritage. Various elements, including solar panels, a natural ventilation system, and green spaces, ensure an effective connection with nature.

The airport terminal is designed to provide a comfortable and seamless experience for passengers, featuring green spaces, treetop staircases, and dedicated areas for relaxation and wellness activities. Additionally, Gelephu International Airport will serve as an urban mobility hub, connecting to Gelephu’s revitalized town center and other regions of Bhutan through trams and buses.

This project will be showcased at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. The airport is set to open in 2029, serving as a key gateway to Bhutan while balancing cultural heritage with modern infrastructure.
