Cs Somme Cafe: Kengo Kuma’s Creative Design for a Sustainable and Beautiful Environment

March 27, 2025

Architecture studio Kengo Kuma and Associates, led by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, has designed a web-like canopy around the Cs Somme Cafe in Fukuoka, Japan, using steel and mesh. Known for his minimalist designs and use of natural materials, Kengo Kuma has applied sustainable design principles and a strong connection to the environment in this project. His designs consistently aim to align architecture with nature while creating spaces that foster interaction between humans and their surroundings.

This canopy, known as a modern version of flying buttresses, creates an earthquake-resistant structure for the single-story cafe. The cafe is housed in a rectangular volume connected to a network of steel beams, and this design contributes to both the strength and beauty of the space.

The cafe is designed to help reduce energy consumption by minimizing solar gain. On one side, the cafe is connected to a parking lot, while on the opposite side, extensive glazing presents a view of the well-organized outdoor space. Where the canopy meets the ground, steel arches allow visitors to enjoy the view of the outside.

Inside the cafe, the space features a minimalist design with a polished white counter, white walls, concrete flooring, and steel elements. Wooden chairs alongside the bar and translucent light fixtures made of fabric, resembling the mesh canopy, create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Additionally, a large wooden piece is used as a sliding door behind the staff preparation area. The design of this cafe not only serves functional purposes but also provides a beautiful visual experience.
