Foster + Partners unveils Paraguay’s tallest skyscraper in Asunción

July 27, 2025

International architecture studio Foster + Partners has unveiled the design for Paraguay’s tallest skyscraper, named Sudameris Plaza, in the capital city of Asunción. Standing at an impressive height of 188 metres with 39 storeys, the tower will not only serve as the new headquarters for Sudameris Bank but will also surpass the iconic Icono Tower to become the tallest structure in the South American country. Selected through an international competition, the project is set to become a new landmark on Asunción’s skyline.

Sudameris Plaza is more than just an office tower — it is a fusion of functionality, nature, and urban life. The design integrates public spaces on the ground floor, including an art gallery, auditorium, retail outlets, and a lush open garden that functions as a vibrant urban plaza. The tower’s double-height lobby is set back from the street and connected to a landscaped pedestrian path, creating a welcoming, human-centered experience that redefines the typical entrance to a corporate building.

The main offices of the bank are located on the lower and upper levels, while the middle floors are designed to be leased by other companies. On the northern side of the tower, open-plan workspaces maximize access to natural light. The southern side features collaborative and social areas with direct views of the public garden. Sky gardens distributed throughout the building enhance the sense of connection with nature, creating an interactive, dynamic, and calming environment for occupants.

David Summerfield, head of Foster + Partners studio, describes this project as a new benchmark in high-rise design, combining sustainable architecture, nature, and human needs. According to him, Sudameris Plaza not only provides an efficient working environment but also creates a new experience in the heart of Asunción as an open, green urban space for residents and users alike. This project represents an important step toward a human-centered and nature-driven future in South American urban development.
