Matière Première architecture studio, together with its construction partner Nu Drom, has initiated a joint project in a lush area at the gateway of the city of Magog, Quebec. The main goal of this collaboration is to create a space that seamlessly integrates architectural design and construction—a concept that has evolved from years of partnership between the two teams. The result is two distinct yet harmonious buildings: one dedicated to artisanal production and the other designed for administrative functions, creative work, and public engagement.
The architecture office is situated in a location overlooking Mount Orford and surrounded by pine trees, carefully designed to respect the local context. Its minimalist form, inspired by the region’s rural architecture, combined with the use of natural cedar wood that gradually harmonizes with the environment, creates a dynamic and evolving architectural experience. Large windows bring light into the interior in varying ways throughout different hours and seasons, blurring the boundary between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape.
Landscape design is a fundamental element of this project, aiming to create a sensory and visual balance between the built environment and the untouched nature. Portions of the land have been left in their natural state, and through subtle boundaries formed by concrete flower boxes and native plants, the human presence within nature is expressed in a respectful and serene manner.
Inside the building, the same thoughtful and emotive approach continues. A steel staircase with a wooden finish connects the public ground floor spaces to the creative studio above. The use of warm, natural materials, along with a design that allows for easy future adaptability of the space, reflects a sustainable and human-centered approach. Attention to natural light, proper ventilation, and intelligent thermal performance transforms the environment into a comfortable and inspiring place for work and creativity.
