Tencent recently captured the attention of the professional architecture and technology community with the unveiling of the ‘Hunyuan3D World Model 1.0.’ This is the world’s first open-source AI model capable of directly generating an explorable and interactive three-dimensional world from a text description or image—a leap beyond single-object or static scene creation, now providing full 3D world access without the need for specialized 3D knowledge or lengthy production time.
This technology was introduced during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai on July 26, 2025, and utilizes a multi-stage architecture—from panorama generation to conversion into a movable 3D mesh. The Panorama-DiT model first produces 360-degree views based on text or image inputs, then applies layered processing and mesh reconstruction to create a navigable and realistic environment. This process allows users to explore the generated scenes and interact with the environment.
Hunyuan3D 1.0 provides open access to its source code, model weights, and documentation for free, enabling development and applications in areas such as game development, virtual tourism, urban design, virtual reality content creation, and digital simulation. Its compatibility with popular engines like Unity and Unreal Engine allows architects and designers to easily integrate or quickly edit scenes.
Although this technology represents a significant leap in architectural design and visualization, it still has limitations, such as relatively moderate detail quality and lack of support for complex behaviors like environmental physics or multi-user interactions. However, with the path set by the Hunyuan consortium, the future outlook includes versions with enhanced capabilities, finer details, and broader interactivity—fully aligned with the evolving needs of the architecture industry.
