Transformation of the industrial zone of Naple with Zaha Hadid Architects’ Masterplan

March 3, 2025

The Napoli Porta Est masterplan, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and the winning competition entry, has been presented with the aim of reconnecting the scattered parts of Naples and sustainably revitalizing the derelict industrial zone. This plan includes the creation of flexible infrastructure, a large urban park, and the restoration of abandoned railway yards for public use.

A key element of this plan is the new Campania Region headquarters, designed as a civic hub that optimizes energy consumption through the use of bioclimatic technologies. The buildings feature dynamic facades that reduce solar heat gain and enhance the use of natural light.

The Napoli Porta Est masterplan also transforms 10 hectares of derelict land into an urban park to strengthen the city’s connection with nature. The project includes shaded walkways and plazas extending from Porta Nolana to transport hubs.

This plan redevelops more than 30 hectares of derelict industrial land, including old factories, to create public spaces. Additionally, by redesigning one of Naples’ main intersections, it improves access to the central station and surrounding areas, and by establishing a new railway station and pedestrian pathways, it reduces traffic.

In line with sustainable development, this project utilizes advanced technologies such as water recycling systems, geothermal energy, and solar panels to reduce energy consumption and mitigate environmental impacts.
