The Vipp Tunnel is a self-sufficient and unique retreat in Tasmania, designed by the architecture studio Room11. Based in Hobart, Tasmania, the studio is known for its innovative and environmentally sensitive approach to design. The Vipp Tunnel project on Bruny Island dramatically emerges from the land, showcasing the beauty of Tasmania’s nature within a glass frame from wall to wall, with its concrete, brutalist design. This 160-square-meter retreat, featuring large windows and recessed steel doors, offers an uninterrupted view of the natural landscape and surrounding beauty.
In the design of this project, Room11 used a combination of natural materials, simple designs, and attention to detail to effectively harmonize the interior space with the surrounding environment. Notably, the interior features a Vipp aluminum kitchen and furniture made from Australian wool, which complements the project’s minimalist design. The project is fully powered by renewable energy, with its west-facing facade covered in solar panels, making it one of the first buildings to have its entire facade constructed with solar panels.
Alongside this striking design, the artworks of Danish artist Lin Utzon, particularly the “Cosmic Dancers” sculptures, are installed beside the towering eucalyptus trees, creating a deep connection between art and nature. The Vipp Tunnel not only offers a unique experience of sustainable and self-sufficient living but also harmonizes beautifully with the natural beauty of Tasmania and the design philosophy of Room11.
